Welcome to Year 1
Mrs Graham, Miss Fordy and Mrs Rounsley-Freer
Year 1 is an exciting and important stage in your child’s learning journey. It provides a bridge between the play-based experiences of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the more structured learning of Key Stage 1. Throughout the year, children continue to develop their confidence, independence and resilience while building strong foundations in Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
At Lingfield, we provide a rich and engaging curriculum where learning is purposeful, stimulating and enjoyable. Children have many opportunities to explore, investigate and apply their learning through practical, hands-on activities that inspire curiosity and creativity. Our nurturing environment encourages children to take risks in their learning, ask questions and develop a positive attitude towards challenges.
We support every child to recognise their achievements and work towards personal goals. By celebrating effort, perseverance and progress, we help children develop a strong growth mindset and a belief that they can succeed. The progress children make during Year 1 is remarkable, and it is always wonderful to see how much they have grown academically, socially and emotionally by the end of the year.
Phonics Screening Check
In June, all Year 1 children will take part in the national Phonics Screening Check. This short assessment helps to measure children’s ability to apply their phonics skills when reading familiar and unfamiliar words.
Phonics is a key part of our Year 1 curriculum, and we are committed to ensuring that every child develops the knowledge and confidence needed to become a successful reader. We greatly value the support of parents and carers and encourage daily reading at home, alongside regular practice of the sounds and graphemes highlighted on the phonics phase mats sent home each week. Working together helps children make excellent progress and prepares them well for the screening check and their future reading journey.

Year 1 Newsletters
At the beginning of each term, we send home a Newsletter. This newsletter outlines the key topics and areas of learning that will be covered during the term.
We encourage parents and carers to use this as a starting point for conversations with their children about their learning. If you wish to explore any aspect further, you are welcome to reach out to us directly.
