“Be makers. Be thinkers. Be problem solvers.”

Our DT Intent

At Lingfield Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology inspires children to become creative thinkers, innovative problem-solvers and confident makers. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, pupils use their imagination and creativity to design products and solutions that address real-life needs and challenges.

Our curriculum encourages children to explore and evaluate existing products, develop their own ideas, and apply knowledge and skills from a range of subjects, including mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Children work with a variety of materials, tools and techniques to design and create purposeful products while developing resilience, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Design and Technology provides opportunities for children to design, make, evaluate and improve their work, helping them understand how products are developed and refined in the wider world.

At Lingfield Primary School, we aim for all children to:

  • Recognise the importance and impact of Design and Technology in everyday life.
  • Understand that Design and Technology is a creative and practical subject that involves designing, making and evaluating products.
  • Develop a secure understanding of the design, make, evaluate process and apply it confidently across a range of projects.
  • Become confident in selecting and using a range of tools, equipment and materials safely and responsibly.
  • Build problem-solving, critical thinking and teamwork skills through practical design challenges.
  • Develop creativity, resilience and independence when creating and refining their ideas.
  • Leave primary school with the knowledge, skills and confidence to apply Design and Technology in future learning and everyday life.
  • Food and nutrition is woven throughout our curriculum across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, as well as through dedicated Design and Technology units. Children learn about healthy eating, balanced diets and food preparation while developing practical cooking skills.
